One of the city’s major landmarks is Maidan – a large park along the Hooghly which contains a number of fine drives, a racecourse, cricket ground, and the historical Fort William – originally built in 1696 and rebuilt in 1757. To the south-east of Maidan is a domed marble landmark – the Victoria Memorial – was built in 1921 to commemorate the reign of Queen Victoria.
