Day 2
Red Wing, USA, Minnesota

Originally the site of a Sioux Indian Village, the city of Red Wing lies along the banks of the Mississippi River. Red Wing was recently added to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, for its “impressive architecture and enviable natural environment”. Named after the Sioux chief, Red Wing has a diverse and rich history, which can still be seen today throughout the streets and on the nearby Prairie Island Indian Reservation.

Day 3
La Crosse, USA, Wisconsin

Situated in western Wisconsin is the river town of La Crosse. Located 129 miles northwest of Madison, it is here that the Black and La Crosse rivers flow into the Mississippi. It offers an inviting charm and romance, with a history revolving around the steamboat era. From the 540ft Grandad Bluff, you can enjoy fantastic views over three states. In the Riverside park, you will find an array of beautiful gardens and an outdoor performance centre. There is also a restored, 19th century downtown business district which is home to a number of galleries and museums.

4
Day 4
Dubuque, USA, Iowa

Located in north-east Iowa, on the banks of the Mississippi River, is Dubuque – the oldest permanent settlement and largest city in the state. It features a charming downtown area and is home to many colourful Victorian mansions. The city was named after a French Trader, who concluded a treaty in 1788 with the Fox Indians that gave him lead-mining rights. The city’s Old Shot Tower, which dates back to 1856, is a testament to the city’s mining heritage. During the Civil War, the tower utilised locally mined lead to form bullets. Today, you can embark on a tour of the Bevens Lead Mine and Platteville Mining Museum. Alternatively, you could visit the National Mississippi River Museum or the Aquarium and learn more about the area.

5
Day 5
Davenport, USA, Iowa

Located in eastern Iowa, the city of Davenport rises 200 feet from the north bank of the Mississippi River. It was once the homeland of the Sauk and Mesquakie tribes but, following the Black Hawk Treaty of 1832, it was later sold to a fur company headed by Colonel George Davenport and is now one of America’s most renowned farming cities. It was here that the first railway bridge across the Mississippi River was opened, in 1856, and today the town offers a theatre, riverboat cruises, a number of blues and jazz festivals, and many other places of considerable interest. These include: the Davenport Museum of Art, which features a notable collection of Grant Wood Paintings; Vander Veer Botanical Park; and the Putnam Museum of History and Natural Science.

6
Day 6
Hannibal, USA, Missouri

Situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, in north-eastern Missouri, is the city of Hannibal. It was here that Samuel Langhorne Clemens, otherwise known as Mark Twain, grew up and the city provided the setting for some of his books including his classics about Tom Sawyer and Huckelberry Finn. Mark Twain memorials in the city include his boyhood home and museum, Judge Clemens’ Law Office, “Becky Thatcher” House, and the Pilaster House. Located two miles outside of the city is the Mark Twain Cave, which was a reputed hideout for Jesse James. It is also worth noting that Molly Brown – a heroine of the Titanic and subject of the The Unsinkable Molly Brown musical – was born in Hannibal.

7
Day 7
St Louis, USA, Missouri

St Louis is a major city lying on the west banks of the Mississippi River. Named after Louis IX of France, St Louis was founded as a 18th century French trading post and became the gateway to the west and a major port for Mississippi River steamboats. The city is best known today for its soaring steel Gateway Arch designed in 1965 to commemorate the pioneers of the west.
