Near the junction of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers lies the city of Portland. Not far from mountains, ocean and desert the city is a place of natural grandeur. Also known as the City of Roses, it is host to an annual Rose Festival, as well as being full of beautiful public gardens. Brimming with stately 19th century architecture, and the recognizable Chinatown Gate, Portland is the place to see national historic district.

Located strategically along the banks of the Colombia River is one of Oregon’s most historic cities, The Dalles. The town was most renowned for being the end of the Oregon Trail, and was the site where pioneers loaded their wagons onto rafts to sail the Colombia River to Oregon City. Among the stops on The Dalles Old Town walking tour is the Fort Dalles Museum, which houses a collection of military artefacts and medical equipment.

Pendleton, USA, Arkansas

Home of the Arkansas Post National Monument, the town of Pendleton, lies on the Arkansas River just 15 miles north of Dumas. Though the Post has been relocated several times over the years, the establishment of the post marked the first in a long line of struggles between France, Spain and England over the North American continent. Before the civil war, Pendleton was a thriving river port and the largest city in the region, sites now include a memorial museum to commemorate this long and multi-layered history. Its location on the Arkansas River means there are also excellent opportunities to fish and watch the local wildlife.
