Clarkston, USA, Washington

Located west of the Lewiston metropolitan area, across the Snake River, is the city of Clarkston. It is one of the Northwest region’s most inland seaports and is located not far from Hell Canyon – the deepest canyon in North America and known for its scenic surroundings and abundance of wildlife.

Pendleton, USA, Arkansas

Home of the Arkansas Post National Monument, the town of Pendleton, lies on the Arkansas River just 15 miles north of Dumas. Though the Post has been relocated several times over the years, the establishment of the post marked the first in a long line of struggles between France, Spain and England over the North American continent. Before the civil war, Pendleton was a thriving river port and the largest city in the region, sites now include a memorial museum to commemorate this long and multi-layered history. Its location on the Arkansas River means there are also excellent opportunities to fish and watch the local wildlife.

The Dalles, USA, Oregon

Located strategically along the banks of the Colombia River is one of Oregon’s most historic cities, The Dalles. The town was most renowned for being the end of the Oregon Trail, and was the site where pioneers loaded their wagons onto rafts to sail the Colombia River to Oregon City. Among the stops on The Dalles Old Town walking tour is the Fort Dalles Museum, which houses a collection of military artefacts and medical equipment.

Also known as the City of Roses, it is host to an annual Rose Festival, as well as being full of beautiful public gardens. Brimming with stately 19th century architecture, and the recognizable Chinatown Gate, Portland is the place to see national historic district.

Astoria, USA, Oregon

Astoria is named after the American investor, John Jacob Astor, whose American Fur Company founded Fort Astoria in 1811. It became the first permanent United States settlement on the Pacific coast and is surrounded by forested areas, mountains, three rivers and the sea. There are three significant natural attractions in the area and these include the Crater Lake National Park, Columbia River Gorge and Mount Hood. One of the most important landmarks in Astoria is the Fort Clatsop National Memorial, which pays tribute to the Lewis and Clark Expedition that explored the area in 1805. Alternatively, you can explore the city’s waterfront on the restored Riverfront Trolley, or delve into the area’s history by visiting one of the city’s many museums.
