Day 1
Oporto, Portugal

Located along the Douro river estuary, Oporto is the second largest city in Portugal. Being one of the oldest European centres, Oporto has also had its historical core proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Due to its long history dating back to 300BC, the city of Porto has an incredible architectural patrimony, including the Romanesque Porto Cathedral. Perhaps the  item Porto is most famous for is its internationally loved and exported Port Wine.

Entre-os-Rios, Portugal

As the name implies, Entre-os-Rios implies “between two rivers” – with those rivers being the Palva and the Douro. This Portuguese port provides spectacular scenery in the form of vineyards, which cover the slopes of the Douro valley. This area is where the world-renowned port wine is produced and has gained UNESCO World Heritage status.

Regua, Portugal

Lying along the banks of the Douro River is the historic town of Regua. Being a busy port town, from here you can visit the town of Vila Real, or Lamego with its splendid baroque buildings and 18th century manor house, Casa de Mateus. Considered to be one of the best examples of baroque architecture in the whole of Portugal, Casa de Mateus, also boasts beautiful gardens and views of the surrounding area.

Pinhao, Portugal

Typically rustic and traditional the Portuguese town of Pinhao lie on the Douro River. There are many notable places of interest around the town, included beautiful vine clad terraces and the glazed tile railway station. Pinhao is also a great starting block for visiting the charming surrounding villages, including Lamego with is baroque buildings and Sao Salvador do Mundo .

Vega de Terron, Spain

Vega de Terrón lies on the Douro River in Spain, although close to the Portuguese border. As with many ports in this part of the world, there are many opportunities to sample and buy some fantastic port wine.

From here you can also visit Castelo Rodrigo, a small fortified village which shows what life was like during medieval times. The ancient city of Salamanca is also a big draw for tourists. It is one of Spain’s greatest historical and artistic places and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Back in Vega de Terrón, the Chafariz dos Pretos fountain on the market square is worth checking out as you wander the narrow streets.
